She was born in 1981 in the city of Fastiv, Ukraine and graduated
Ukrainian Language and Literature at the Language Institute of
Shevchenko National University of Kiev. She has worked as a radio and TV
journalist. Currently, she is a member of the National Writers' Union
of Ukraine, the Association of Ukrainian Writers, and the Slavic Academy
of Literature and the Arts (Bulgaria).
Anna Bagriana has published 7 books of poetry, 2 collections of plays
and 3 novels: “The Etymology of Blood” (Kiev, 2008), “Such a Strange
Love This Is” (Kiev 2010), and “The Pesterer” (Kiev, 2012). She has also
compiled and translated an anthology of contemporary Macedonian poetry.
Her novel “Such a Strange Love This Is” is translated into
Macedonian. Her collection of dramatic pieces “Plays” is translated into
Macedonian and Serbian (Shtip, Macedonia, 2011; Smederevo, Serbia,
2012).
Prizes: The Ukrainian-German International Honchar Prize, 2008;
Crowning the Word, 2008; Smoloskyp, 2008, for her novel “The Etymology
of Blood”; “Silver Flying Pen”, 2009 (Bulgaria), for her translation of a
book of poetry by Elizaveta Bagriana; Marusia Beck Literary Prize, 2009
(WFUWO, Canada) for her short story “Green Borshch”; the Award of the
International Mediterranean Academy, 2012 (Macedonia, 2012); “Qiriu i
Naimit”, 2012 (Macedonia – Kosovo) for poetry of specific values;
"Panteleymon Kulish" 2013 for her novel “The Pesterer”.
Performances of plays and librettos: “Beyond Time” (a dramatic poem)
at ERA Drama Theater (Kiev) in 2006 and at Premiera Music & Drama
Studio (Kiev) in 2009; “Gloria” (a musical) at the Donetsk National
Ukrainian Academic Theater of Music and Drama, 2010. “Rhododendron” (a
tragicomedy in two acts) at Homin Ukrainian Drama Theater (Chicago) in
2010.
