The Gaze of Orpheus

Translated by: Constantin Severin

I’ve always written looking for Orpheus’s gaze outside of things
the look-music in the heart of the void that moves the stars and planets
a gaze full of love that magnifies your life in Paradise and death in Hell
the gaze that loses Eurydice to win the Song

I’ve always written looking for Orpheus’ gaze inside things
the gaze in the heart of matter that nourishes roots and leaves
a gaze laden with all our light sand dark stories
the gaze that shatters in this poem into a thousand dewy butterflies

I’ve always written looking for Orpheus’ gaze in my gaze
the filigree gaze of the beings and things I love
a gaze engraved with all the joys sins and betrayals of man
the gaze in which the Real and the Imaginary will forever be twin beings

I have always written looking for the gaze of Orpheus in the gaze of God
the gaze-icon that heals the soul’s wounds and exalts Music and Text
a gaze pecked out of the world by angels cherubims and seraphims
the gaze from which the mystery story of all things begins

I have always written seeking Orpheus’ gaze from the heart of the Word
the fire-light gaze from the unextinguished volcanoes of the human condition
a gaze of vellum-bound books of incandescent legends and myths
a gaze that rewrites its resurrection when it sees God
